At 6:45 tonight, we landed in Santo Domingo after a layover in Puerto Rico. There was a van waiting for us to take us into the city to prepare for our bus ride into Haiti. It is hot here, and there are cockroaches running around on the sidewalks everywhere! Well, not everywhere per say, but I saw five tonight, and that is more than enough for me. I am slowly conquering all my fears- first came the shots at Beth Israel last week, and now come the bugs! We went to a Spanish restaurant for dinner tonight, and walking down the streets to the restaurant was quite a culture shock. There are guards outside stores and even outside fast food restaurants. These are not policemen, but rather ordinary men turned into guards by the fact that they are carrying shotguns. It's a little scary walking by men with large shotguns in their hands only a few feet away. I asked one of them to take a picture with me. He said no. Probably not the best idea.
We are leaving the mission in Santo Domingo at 3am to tackle the four hour bus ride into Port Au Price. We are leaving so early because we need to be there right at 7am when the boarder gates open. We are bringing water and supplies which they desperately need.
I am off to take a nap before our bus ride. News from Haiti to follow soon. Love, Courtney
